Senior Congress leader Pawan Dewan, former president of the District Congress Committee (Ludhiana Urban) and Ex‑Chairman of the Punjab Large Industrial Development Board, has urged Director General of Police (Punjab) Gaurav Yadav to order a comprehensive review of arms licenses issued across the state in recent years. In a letter written to the DGP, a copy of which was also released to the media, Dewan highlighted the growing concern over rising crime and the atmosphere of fear among ordinary citizens. He stressed that the review must be carried out in a time bound manner, with instructions to the district police authorities to ensure complete transparency and accountability throughout the process.

Expressing grave concern over Punjab’s deteriorating law and order, Dewan said that the state has witnessed a disturbing surge in crime in recent months. He said this alarming trend has fostered an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the masses. “The escalating incidents of violence and unlawful activities have shaken public confidence,” he asserted, adding that urgent and decisive corrective measures are essential to restore peace and reassure the people of Punjab.Dewan pointed out that while the issuance of arms licenses serves legitimate purposes, it is imperative to ensure that such privileges are not misused or extended to individuals with criminal backgrounds. “A thorough scrutiny of the records will help identify cases where license holders may have subsequently been booked by the police in criminal matters. And wherever such instances are detected, immediate action should be initiated to cancel the concerned licenses without any delay,” he stressed

In his letter to the DGP, Dewan also mentioned that allowing individuals with criminal charges to retain arms licenses poses a grave risk to public safety and undermines the credibility of law enforcement. “The cancellation of such licenses will send a strong message that the state is committed to upholding law and order and will not tolerate any misuse of arms privileges,” he argued.Dewan also emphasized that periodic reports in this regard should be compiled and submitted to the DGP office for effective monitoring. He added that this exercise will not only strengthen public trust in the police but will also act as a deterrent against the misuse of licensed weapons. “A prompt and rigorous review of arms licenses will go a long way in curbing crime and restoring a sense of security among citizens,” Dewan concluded.
