Punjab BJP spokesperson and Sikh thinker Prof. Sarchand Singh Khiala said that the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to hand over the investigation into allegations of financial dealings and corruption in government transfers and postings to the CBI has raised serious questions over the functioning of the Bhagwant Mann government.
Prof. Khiala said that the AAP government came to power making tall claims of being “staunchly honest”, but if the High Court now has to order a CBI probe into allegations of alleged dealings in government transfers and postings during its tenure, it is a major setback to the government’s claims of transparency and clean governance.
He said the most serious aspect is that the High Court was not satisfied with the action taken by the Punjab Police so far. When the court itself has had to turn to the CBI for a fair and transparent investigation, the AAP government must answer the people of Punjab about its model of governance.
Directly questioning Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Prof. Khiala said, “Mr. Bhagwant Mann, the people of Punjab gave you power on the promise of eliminating corruption, not to turn transfers and postings into an alleged centre of financial dealings. These questions are no longer being raised merely by the Opposition—the High Court’s intervention has raised serious questions. Why are allegations of alleged dealings in government transfers and postings emerging during your tenure? Why has the High Court had to order a CBI probe? And why was no effective action taken even after the ED’s letters?”
He said that the allegations against persons linked to the Chief Minister’s Office, as well as senior government officials, cannot simply be dismissed through political statements. The allegations must be investigated impartially and the truth must come before the people of Punjab.
Prof. Khiala said, “AAP had promised to make Punjab corruption-free. But today the question is whether the government actually strengthened the system against corruption or simply issued itself a certificate of ‘staunch honesty’ while putting up boards across the roads proclaiming its claims.”
He said the matter is no longer confined to political allegations. The High Court has directed the CBI to register an FIR, initiate an investigation and submit its report within two months. The Punjab government must therefore extend full cooperation to the investigation and ensure that there is no attempt at any level to influence or obstruct the probe.
Prof. Khiala said that the BJP would not tolerate any compromise with the people’s money, the integrity of the government machinery or the sanctity of public offices. If the CBI investigation establishes the involvement of any individual, strict action must be taken in accordance with law, irrespective of how high the person may be in position or office.
He said, “The people of Punjab are no longer asking for slogans of ‘staunch honesty’; they are asking for accountability. The High Court’s decision sends a clear message—power and public office are not above investigation. The truth must now come out, and Punjab deserves to know who was actually behind the alleged transfer-posting game.”
