Charging Fees for Social Service at an NGO Expo?=Is This Cooperation or a Burden — Navkiran Women Welfare Association Raises Serious Questions

Ludhiana :-Mrs. Aneeta Sharma, President of Navkiran Women Welfare Association and a prominent social activist, has expressed deep concern over the collection of stall fees from social organizations at an NGO/Social Expo being organized in Ludhiana.

She stated that NGOs are not commercial entities. These organizations work selflessly and without profit motives on critical social issues such as drug de-addiction, women empowerment, education, healthcare, environmental protection, and social justice. In such a scenario, charging fees ranging from ₹5,900 to ₹12,980 (including GST) goes against the very spirit and core values of social service.
Famous women activist Ms. Sharma further emphasized that if the true objective of such expos is to promote social initiatives and provide a platform for NGOs, then charging participation fees is not only unjustified but also sends a troubling message to society—that even social service is now being linked to monetary payment.
Navkiran Women Welfare Association firmly believes that in an industrial city like Ludhiana, there is no shortage of CSR funds, corporate support, or government development grants. These resources should be utilized to provide NGOs with free or collaborative platforms, enabling them to effectively showcase their work for the benefit of society.
Expressing particular concern for women-led NGOs, Mrs. Sharma stated that such organizations are already working continuously for society with limited resources. Charging stall fees from them discourages women’s social contributions and contradicts the very essence of women empowerment.
Navkiran Women Welfare Association expects the administration and event organizers to immediately review the fees being charged from NGOs. Social service should be viewed as a partnership, not a revenue-generating activity. Such events should be fully supported through CSR initiatives and government assistance. The organization firmly asserts that promoting social service means cooperation, not collection.
