Khalsa College for Women Organized Hands-On Workshop on Soap Making

The Department of Chemistry and Home Science, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Skill Development Cell, organized a Hands-On Workshop titled “From Oils to Aromas: The Art of Soap Making.” The workshop was held on 26 August 2026 and was conducted by Ms. Tajandeep Kaur.
The workshop introduced participants to the fascinating chemistry behind everyday soap and provided practical exposure to the process of transforming oils and fats into fragrant, cleansing soaps. Participants learned about the role of different oils, fragrances and other ingredients while understanding the scientific principles involved in saponification.
A major focus of the workshop was cold processed soap making, a traditional method in which oils and fats react with an alkali to form soap and naturally occurring glycerin. Unlike hot processed methods, cold processed soap is prepared without deliberately heating the mixture during the main process. Cold processed soap making also provided an excellent practical demonstration of chemistry in everyday life. Students from different streams attended the workshop and explored how the choice and combination of oils influenced the hardness, lather, cleansing properties and overall character of the finished soap, while fragrances, colours and botanicals added creative and aesthetic elements.
The workshop bridged scientific knowledge with practical skills and creativity, demonstrating how chemistry and home science could contribute to useful, innovative and potentially entrepreneurial activities. Participants gained hands-on experience while witnessing the transformation of simple oils and ingredients into beautifully crafted aromatic soaps. The organizers invited students to “Come, Learn & Create!” through this engaging blend of chemistry, creativity and skill development.
