New Delhi(Justice News ) Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) appreciates the defeat of BJP in Jharkhand as a sign of anger among the people against the corporate, communal and authoritarian policies. In the context of the victory of the BJP led alliance in Maharashtra, SKM strongly decried the failure of opposition parties to rally the people on their burning livelihood issues through massive campaigns and struggles. SKM had appealed people to expose, oppose and punish BJP in the Assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
Falling prices of major agricultural commodities were hitting farmers hard in rural Maharashtra, leading many to predict a backlash to the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the Assembly polls. Day Before the Maharashtra Election on November 20, in Latur Market the price of Soybean per quintal was Rs. 4200/ per quintal, 14% less than the government mandated minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 4892/, according to data from agmarknet.gov.in. Similar agrarian distress had played a key role in alliances’ losses in the Lok Sabha polls earlier in this year.
The distressing plight of the common people and the consistent agitations and campaigns by the workers and farmers movements against that have forced the BJP to depend on schemes like Ladki Bahina Yojana. Thus, BJP has indirectly accepted the failure of its governments both- the State and Union- to ensure adequate income to the vast working people through remunerative MSP, minimum wage and employment generation.
The criminal, anti-national strategy of communal polarisation, unjustifiable use of black money and misuse of government machinery including the Election Commission of India were instrumental in the victory of BJP. Despite widespread indebtedness and suicides among farmers, price crash for cotton, soybean and onion even below the current un-remunerative MSP, price rise and large scale unemployment BJP won since Opposition parties failed to put up any alternative policies for the development of working people.
SKM Appeals for Larger Unity of the farmers and workers on issue based struggle to reverse corporate policies and protect livelihood. SKM along with the platforms of workers, agricultural workers and other social sections have to consistently and effectively build massive resistance similar as the ongoing land struggle of farmers in Noida- Greater Noida region of Uttar Pradesh to convince the working people to ultimately reject the pro-corporate communal policies and decisively defeat BJP in electoral struggles also.
