Ashok Prashar Pappi member of Punjab Legislative Assembly from Ludhiana Central constituency yesterday evening visited newly built Indoor Basketball Courts in Guru Nanak Stadium where 75th Junior National Championships for Men & Women are going to be held wef 2nd September to 9th September. The MLA stayed there for more than 2 hours and witnessed practice matches of boys and girls of Punjab teams. Impressed by the performance of teenaged players he spontaneously gave them a sizable amount of cash prizes for their diet requirements. He commended the hard work of coaches Shrijaipal, Saloni and Ravinder at Ludhiana.
In his youth MLA has been a regular visitor to basketball grounds, said Teja Singh Dhaliwal Gen Secretary of association. His visit is a great morale booster for us, said Dhaliwal. Accompanied with the MLA were basketball players of yesteryear Naveen Khosla, Vipin(BSF), Rishi, Deepak, Ashish and Arun Ding.
However, while visiting Hostel Accommodation of Basketball players he expressed dissatisfaction at the dinghy unhygienic conditions in this humid environment and asked the district sports officer present there to improve the same immediately. DSO Kuldip Kumar informed that the department has already started repairing the washrooms and for renovation and repairs of rooms they have written to their higher office which will be done. Brij Goyal of district basketball association also asked for repair of roads leading to basketball courts on both sides, which MLA promised to get it done before the start of championships from his own quota and promised to talk to the Mayor also.
Under the chairmanship of organising committee CP Shri Swapan Sharma IPS and deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain as patron with active support of Parminder Singh Bhandal DCP (Law & Order) An Arujuna Awardee in Basketball and also support of Sanjeev Arora, a Punjab cabinet minister. On a previous day Ludhiana DC while speaking in another function had strongly appealed to people to come to witness this mega national basketball sporting event where there is no entry fees. The organisers are working round the clock, said Goyal and Ravinder Rangowal, the cultural events organiser.
